When a member of a homeschooling network group asked me that question today, without giving it much thought I replied, “actually, I am both”.

I am the founder of Renaissance Christian School of Excellence.  I use to teach in the public school system.  However, I started to see that my oldest was getting lost and frustrated in school.  With so much going on in his classes large enrollment, behavior issues, etc., the spark for learning was beginning to grow dim.  So I decided to pull him out of the public school system and educate him at home.  When my daughter started Kindergarten I decided to teach her at home also.

Then I started to think that it would be wonderful if I could combine the two – “private education” and home education.  After some planning and much praying, Renaissance Chrsitian School of Excellence was started.  RCSE uses several homeschool texts and parent friendly lesson plans thus, allowing parents to become co-teachers and develop a true parent-teacher partnership.  By limiting the our teams (multi-age classes) to ten (10) students we are able to provide individual learning plans for each student enrolled at RCSE.  The low enrollment, parent-teacher partnership, and teams provide a nuturing family environment making RCSE a cottage academy. By participating in many homeschooling events and offering resources to many homeschooling families such as activities, electives and support for core subjects RCSE is also a homeschool support network.  For families that would like to educate their children at home but follow a predesigned curriculum with full teacher support, RCSE is a virtual academy.

I actually enjoy being a part of Renaissance Christian School of Excellence because I am able to still participate fully in my children’s educational process by educating them at home and yet I don’t have to answer to the state since RCSE serves as an umbrella program- thus providing me the best of both worlds.  So when you ask if I am a homeschooler or an employee of Renaissance Christian – I have to say that I am both :-)
